Welcome to episode 22 of the Boom Vision podcast! I'm excited to share today's interview with Kate Mahoney. Kate is a new friend that I am blessed to have been introduced through my wife Ruby. When I connected with Kate, one of the first things she said to me was that it doesn't happen very often that she finds someone that speaks the same soul language when she listened to Episode 1 of Boom Vision. I instantly knew she's been a fantastic guest to share her wisdom with you all today!
As a brief background: Kate is a functional supplement specialist and supplement quality expert whose goal is to empower practitioners and consumers with the knowledge to make informed supplement choices. In 2020, she had nearly 25 years of combined supplement quality-focused education and professional experience in the remedial use of supplements. She was an international functional nutrition instructor for the NTA for 5 years while also working one-on-one with clients in her private practice.
After years of encouragement from her colleagues, at the beginning of 2020 she released a supplement education course for functional practitioners which addressed important quality considerations and the functional use of supplements. Her courses became available in 2022.
Teaching online and consulting one-on-one with colleagues and consumers about supplements has been her primary professional focus these past 2 years.
So without further ado, here's Kate Mahoney!:
[4:07] - Kate's origin story.
- (KM) At 18 years old, she was trained professionally in opera singing in her early years, but her vocal chords took so much scar tissue damage that she could no longer hit the correct notes. Life took a big turn when she couldn't sing anymore.
- Finding her own food sensitivities and allergies, she started dedicating her life in food and nutrition.
- Became health and wellness consultant by late 20's.
- Took this amazing functional nutrition program that was a huge epiphany for Kate: added in the anatomy and physiology aspects that compliments the biochemistry aspects she already had access to with her education.
[9:46] - (KM) In taking that program, "everything in my life came together and started making sense." That was the biggest milestone that lead to where she is today.
[10:03] - (BY) Have you always known your soul's purpose, your path early on in life? Was there an event or inflection point that happened where you had an ah-ha moment of your sense of purpose?
(KM) The first time the lead instructor asked Kate to teach and lead a class, she started to freak out.
When she got up there and started teaching, for the first time in her life, there was this inner truth just rang through the core of her being, that this is what she's meant to be in her life: I'm meant to be a teacher.
[12:01] (KM) "I am meant to be a bringer of information to people, so they can make empowered choices."
It was such a profound moment for Kate. Her body, mind and spirit really connected with her purpose.
[12:47] - (BY) “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” – Steve Jobs quote
[13:22] - (KM) One of my many incarnations in life is a professional tarot card reader for over 10 years. In tarot card reading, there is a card known as The Star, a Major Arcana Number 17 card.
The base foundational definition of it is: when your body, mind and spirit is drawn to go the direction, and you think you know the reason why, by the time you get there, the real reason why you were drawn that direction is completely different than what you originally thought it was.
[14:37] - (BY) For those that are new to supplements? Can it really help or is it just a placebo? If I buy multi-vitamin from Costco, buy and large, am I covered?
(KM) As a supplement quality expert (US based practitioner): 90% of what is on the market (including practitioner's line) are not good quality. There are so many factors that affect quality:
Raw materials: "Everything has to come from something". Most nutrients in supplements are synthesized. 4 commonly used raw materials:
- Corn: 90% of corn are GMO (genetically modified)
- Soy: Also very known to be GMO-ed. Also a common allergen.
- Grains: Gluten is also a very well known sensitivity that people have.
- Nightshades. We know that there are people that are intolerant of nightshades.
[19:12] - (KM) Takeaway: If you are someone who have allergies and sensitivities: If you have a bad reaction to supplements, now you know why!
[20:41] - (BY) What's the biggest misconception of supplements that people often think is true?
(KM) There's 3 big misconceptions
[21:15] - (KM) #1 Misconception: Most people believe the nutrients in supplements are derived from food. They are NOT as I just mentioned, they are mainly synthesized.
For example: ascorbic acid (which is not real Vitamin C), ascorbic acid is just one active component of vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is made from fermented corn dextrose.
Unless you get 'food derived', not food based (marketing term like 'natural'), food derived means the nutrients have been derived from food.
[23:40] - (KM) There are a lot of people that have bad reactions to ascorbic acid, because they have histamine intolerance. Because ascorbic acid is using a fermented process, they are very high in histamines.
#2 Misconception: "If it's on the market, it's safe!" Supplements have their purpose.
[25:35] - (KM) "Every structure and every function of the body, is built from and runs off of nutrients."
It's ideal you be working with someone that specializes in the biochemistry of the body, that can help make sure what ever supplements that you use:
- Are compatible with your body
- That your body is actually ready for it
- They are familiar with supplements, that they are not suggesting something that has negative feedback loop.
If it's on the market, doesn't necessarily mean it's safe.
[32:30] - (KM) If you want to get the most for your money:
- Spend your money on high quality foods which do have the nutrients in their natural form,
- If you do need supplements to get your body back into balance, be working with a specialist who has been trained to recognize:
a) what is most compatible to your body,
b) what your body is ready for,
c) and what your body really needs in each step of your health journey.
[34:22] (KM) My biggest takeaway I want your audience to get today is: if you do not know how to decipher and determine the product is actually worth money:
- Find a practitioner that can do it for you, or
- Learn how to do it yourself.
Most importantly: just choose clean food, non GMO.
[36:20] (KM) "Spend your money on good food. You are never going to supplement your way out of not eating good food, ever."
Organizations like Safeway have decided to invest in organics and clean food.
[38:50] (KM) Tip: You don't have to make the changes all at once! You can do it once a week, so within a year you can make 52 trade outs and swaps that are in direct support of your help.
[39:43] (KM) #3 Misconception: All supplement quality are the same. This is far from the truth.
1) Raw material, 2) Manufacturing practices 3) Excipients - 'other ingredients' on the labels of the supplement bottles.
Number of excipients is an indicator of quality. If there's more than 2-3 excipients and things you don't recognize, you may want to put that bottle back on shelf.
[39:43] (KM) Another tip on quality considerations: If there is a supplement company that is making everything under the sun, probably not the best quality product.
[46:03] - (BY) As a functional practitioner and supplement expert, what has nourishing the physical body taught you when it comes to having a balance of mind, body and soul?
(KM) "You literally cannot have an optimally balanced mind and soul unless the physical body is healthy on the cellular level."
[49:06] - (KM) It's a holy trifecta: the body, the mind and soul. You have to balance all three parts in order for them to exist in true harmony that we desire.
[49:29] - (BY) Kate, you're very multidimensional when it comes to what you know and how you serve. What is a tool in your toolkit that has recently made the biggest difference in your mind, body and spirit balance?
(KM): There was some serious emotional blockages that I was carrying in my physical body. Her friend through functional testing, help her identified Root Issue Mantras that she incorporated in her daily routine with Emotional Freedom Technique: EFT.
EFT + mantras: released all this emotional weight so that she can help her come into alignment with herself.
[52:41] - (BY) Can you give one mantra example?
(KM) One of my mantra is: I choose love.
Another example: I honor myself.
[55:15] - (KM) Just wanted to share with your listeners, if you are at a place in your life where you are really struggling right now. Like you know you want these things, you know the kind of person you want to be, but you feeling all these blockages in getting there. There is this person you want to be in alignment with your soul, but you struggle in manifesting that into being.
One of the things I want to share is that we are literally the sum of our choices, moment to moment. Each moment is an opportunity: who is the person I want to be, and what choice would they make in this moment? And make that choice.
(BY): Reminds me of the quote we share often in our household: "Embrace who you are and embody who you want to become"
[59:40] - (BY) What book either you're currently reading or have read in the past year, that has a positive impact to you and why?
[1:02:30] - (BY) What is one thing you would tell yourself if you had an ability to travel back 10 years ago and share with your younger self?
(KM) Your life does make sense and you're on the right path. Everything does happen for a reason. Just continue to be true to your inner core and find the courage to keep making the choices in alignment with your authentic self.
